How do you sanitize a tattoo machine?
Sanitizing a tattoo
machine is crucial for preventing infections and ensuring a safe
environment for both the tattoo artist and the client. Here are the steps to
properly sanitize a tattoo machine:
1. Wear Gloves
- Always wear disposable gloves before handling the tattoo
machine to prevent cross-contamination.
2. Disassemble the Machine
- Take apart the tattoo machine carefully, removing all parts
like the needle, tube, grip, and other components.
- Dispose of any single-use parts such as needles and tubes in a
designated sharps container.
3. Clean Off Excess Ink
- Wipe off any tattoo
ink, blood, or other residue from the tattoo machine and its parts
using a clean cloth or disposable wipes soaked in a cleaning solution.
4. Soak in Disinfectant
- Soak the reusable components of the machine (grip, tube, etc.)
in an appropriate medical-grade disinfectant solution (e.g., Cavicide,
Madacide).
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for how long to soak the
parts to ensure proper disinfection.
5. Ultrasonic Cleaner
- For a more thorough clean, place the disassembled parts into an
ultrasonic cleaner. This device uses sound waves to remove any tiny
particles or contaminants left on the machine.
6. Rinse with Sterile Water
- After soaking and using the ultrasonic cleaner, rinse the parts
with sterile or distilled water to remove any traces of disinfectant.
7. Dry the Parts
- Let all the components air-dry completely on a clean, sterile
surface or use sterile cloths. Avoid using a towel that might introduce
contaminants.
8. Autoclave the Reusable Parts
- Place any parts that are autoclavable (usually grips and tubes)
in an autoclave. This machine uses high pressure and steam to kill
any remaining bacteria, viruses, or pathogens.
- Ensure that all the autoclavable parts are packaged in sterile
pouches before placing them into the autoclave.
9. Wipe Down the Frame
- Wipe the frame and non-removable parts of the machine with a
hospital-grade disinfectant. Use a disposable wipe or a paper towel soaked
in disinfectant to clean hard-to-reach places.
10. Wrap the Machine
- Once the machine is cleaned, sanitized, and reassembled, wrap
the machine in barrier film (plastic wrap or other protective
coverings) to prevent it from becoming contaminated during use.
By following these steps, you can maintain
proper hygiene in your tattoo studio and reduce the risk of infection or
contamination.
